becoming
Becoming was an exciting and innovative place-based arts project working with local older people. Becoming challenged perceptions of what it means to be an older person, addressed social isolation and loneliness and generated an arts and cultural experience to celebrate diverse community in the City of Port Phillip.
Becoming brought together older people with and without disability to work with members of the Rawcus Ensemble and Director Celebrate Ageing in a multidisciplinary arts project exploring the lived experiences of ageing and disability through performing and visual arts.
Becoming promoted positive ageing, challenged cultural norms, reflected changing aspirations and celebrated the diversity of Port Phillip. Becoming was an artistic expression of 'connection to people, community and place' through dance, movement, film and photography. Becoming empowered participants to express their identity and experiences.
Becoming was supported by The City of Port Phillip’s Cultural Development Fund and Gandel Philanthropy. Choreography by Rinske Ginsberg, photography by Paul Dunn and films by Tim O’Keefe and Marie Pangaud.
The works created, photographic portraits and short films, were presented in a public exhibition at the Carlisle Street Arts Space, St Kilda Town Hall. We have shared some of the images and film below.

Intergenerational learning
Over a series of workshops, artists and participants collaborated through movement, discussion, exercises and multimedia to connect and learn from each other - to make art about ageing and how we continue to Become as we age.
celebrate ageing bodies
A series of photographs capture beauty in the human form and how it changes as we age. The photographs give permission to look deeply at and celebrate our ageing bodies.
The Film
A short film with participants narratives about who they are Becoming as they age.
Partners
Becoming was led by Rawcus in partnership with the Celebrate Ageing Program and supported by The City of Port Phillip’s Cultural Development Fund and Gandel Philanthropy.
