Old is Beautiful

The Old is Beautiful program combats ageism by critiquing the hierarchy of beauty that dominates many Western cultures. The hierarchy privileges physical beauty and young, thin, white, able bodied women. This narrow definition of beauty results in body dissatisfaction across the lifespan - including internalised ageism for older people.

The Old is Beautiful program redefines beauty to include all ages, genders, skin colours, shapes, sizes, sexualities, and abilities. In fashion activities and workshops, older people are encouraged to embrace their age, value their body and share body positive messages with their peers and younger people. Older people participating in the program have redefined beauty, as the following quotes show:
  • Beautiful isn't about my reflection in the mirror, its the reflections on how I live my life. Aunty Becky Thomson
  • Beautiful is what radiates from within as we age. John Quinn
  • Beautiful is a face which conveys warmth and humour, personality stamped on a face. Irene Mooney
  • Beautiful is inner strength, being myself. The lines on my face show I have lived life. Max Primmer.
The Old is Beautiful program is a fun, engaging way of working with older people - with powerful results. Evaluation of workshops for older people has shown a reduction in internalised ageism by 20%. The program has also been very successful at engaging the broader community in understanding the consequences of ageism for older people, and for themselves.
