Workplaces for Older Women
Gendered ageism is a problem in the workplace for older women. This issue sits in the context of a lifetime of gender inequalities and data showing older women are the lowest income earning family group and at risk of housing insecurity. There is a need to ensure older women have safe, respectful and equitable workplaces.
The Workplaces for Older Women (WOW) project aims to help combat age-based discrimination for older women in the workplace. The project is inclusive of marginalised groups of older women who experience other forms of discrimination (such as racism, ableism, transphobia etc) alongside age-based discrimination.

Project activities
The WOW project is being conducted in 2026-2027, with the following stages:
- Undertaking a needs analysis: survey/interviews with older women, workplaces, expert consultation and survey
- Clarifying the benchmark: documenting principles/indicators for equitable workplaces for older women
- Developing guidelines: a guide to developing a gender equality action plan for older women at work
- Raising awareness: hosting a webinar to launch the guidelines and resources
- Coaching services: through a community of practice focused on equitable workplaces for older women
- Documenting a theory of change: disseminating a program logic model outlining what works.
Women 60+ wanted for interviews or survey
We are calling for women aged 60+ (living in Victoria) to share their experiences of age related discrimination in the workplace. We would value the opportunity to hear about what works - and what doesn't work. We would also value the opportunity to hear from women who experience other forms of discrimination (e.g.: racism, ableism, transphobia) alongside age based discrimination.
Workplace perspectives wanted
We are calling for service providers to share their perspectives on age discrimination for older women in the workplace, including what works and what doesn't. Click on the links below for the confidential survey or interviews.
