Workplaces for Older Women
Ageism is a problem in the workplace, with older women more likely to experience age related discrimination in the workplace. This issue sits in the context of a lifetime of gender inequalities and data showing older women are the lowest income earning family group and at risk of housing insecurity. Older women have the right to safe, respectful and equitable workplaces.
The Workplaces for Older Women (WOW) project aims to help combat age-based discrimination for older women in the workplace. The project is inclusive of marginalised groups of older women who experience other forms of discrimination (such as racism, ableism, transphobia etc) alongside age-based discrimination.

Project activities
The WOW project will be conducted in 2026 and will include the following key stages:
- Undertaking a needs analysis: survey and interviews with older women, expert consultation and survey
- Clarifying the benchmark: documenting principles/indicators for equitable workplaces for older women
- Developing guidelines: a guide to developing a gender equality action plan for older women at work
- Raising awareness: hosting a webinar to launch the guidelines and resources
- Coaching services: through a community of practice focused on equitable workplaces for older women
- Documenting a theory of change: disseminating a program logic model outlining what works.
Calling women 60+ (living in Victoria) for interviews
We are currently calling for women aged 60+ (living in Victoria), who are willing to share their experiences of age related discrimination in the workplace (including recruitment). We would value the opportunity to hear from women who experience other forms of discrimination (e.g.: racism, ableism, transphobia) alongside age based discrimination.
