The theme for Embolden2023 is Words Make Worlds, drawing on theories of language as a powerful tool for change. Language reflects and preserves the cultural values and practices that perpetuate the ageism and the inequalities experienced by older people. In other words, language mirrors our culture - and can be used to drive culture change. Please see program below or download here.
Registration: Tuesday 3rd October, 1-2pm
Registration opens one hour before the Symposium at the Daylesford Town Hall in Vincent St (the main street of Daylesford). All events will be held at the Town Hall.
Welcome to Country: Tuesday, 2-2.30pm
Welcome to Country by Dja Dja Wurrung People and presentation on respect for Elders in Dja Dja Wurrung culture.
Congress of Voices from the Margins: Tuesday, 2.30-6pm
Marginalised groups of older people (and their representatives) will share perspectives on ageism and respect for older people. All attendees will be invited to participate in a Design Cafe to explore more Inclusive families, communities, services and policies.

Networking event: Tuesday, 6.30-8pm
The Market of Great Ideas invites delegates to share their great ideas for combatting ageism/building respect. We will host a 'speed networking' activity to help you connect with other delegates to share your Great Idea. Bring any information you would like to share. Finger food will be provided by Splade to Blade Catering.
Co-Leadership and Older People: Wednesday, 9-9.30am
Hear from Fellows of the Elder Leadership Academy about the power of older people to contribute beyond ideas of consultation, representation and lived experience. The concept of Co-Leadership recognises older people as critical thinkers, strategic planners, designers, networkers and evaluators.
Old is Beautiful: Wednesday, 9.30-10.30am
This session launches the #OldisBeautiful workshops, promoting primary prevention of Elder Abuse and disrespect. Older people and service providers will reflect on workshop facilitation, participation and evaluation. Workshop photo portraits of older people and their messages about what Beautiful means to them will also be presented.

The power of words, Prof Kate Burridge: 11am-12midday
Professor Kate Burridge will reflect on ageist language and the power of language to lead change. Kate is a Professor of Linguistics at Monash University and Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. Her main areas of research including language change, ageist language and de-tabooing depression and anxiety in old age. She is a much loved, regular guest on ABC radio.

Words Make Worlds - Makeshops: 12.30-2pm
The interactive session includes presentations, discussion, interactive activities and practical strategies to combat ageism by changing our language.
Preventing fatigue and burnout: 2-3pm
Fatigue, burnout and workforce shortages are real issues in a 'post-covid' world. These issues are amplified for advocates and carer givers (paid and unpaid) working in a world that does not value older people - or those who work with/for older people. This session considers how we reduce fatigue and burn out to Continue doing the important work we need to do, and how we retain valued workers.
Presenters include Stephanie Dowrick, Australian writer, Interfaith Minister and social activist, who has written 20+ books (5 best sellers) including Your Name is Not Anxious. Stephanie will be joined by Debra Nicholl and Catherine Barrett, who will present practical and engaging strategies for taking care of ourselves, our colleagues and the people we love.

Artist in Residence
Dr. Julie Gross McAdam PhD is an artist and the director of MAC.ART, an internationally respected and multi-award winning dementia-specific art as recreation therapy program. She has directed 3000+ artists in aged and community healthcare settings in Australia and North America to depict the life and times of the contributing participants. Julie is an Executive Member of the Society for the Arts in Dementia Care (North America) and holds in the graphic arts, recreation therapy, aged care and dementia services. Julie will work with delegates to produce a visual art piece responding to the theme #OldisBeautiful.
