Old is Beautiful
Beauty changes with age, but is not less. The ageist view that beauty is limited to youth is harmful to older people, and to society more broadly. It devalues and socially isolates older people and can erode self esteem, health and wellbeing. It also robs those who are not yet old of an optimistic pathway for their ageing and hope for their future.
The #OldisBeautiful project recognises beautiful is more than a physical form - it includes attitude, character, spirit and encompasses all shapes, sizes, skin colours, genders, sexualities and abilities. This primary prevention project aims to promote respect for older people.
Thankyou to Elder Rights Advocacy Victoria for supporting the Victorian pilot and launch on #IDOP23 with the distribution of one of the portraits around the city. Media release here.

How to participate
The #OldisBeautiful project involves workshops with older people to explore ageism and what beautiful means to them and to document these meanings in word and portrait photographs. The workshops help to combat internalised ageism, the photos and messages are shared to combat ageism in our culture. The #OldisBeautiful tool kit will be available through our online education platform (coming soon).
Patrons and icons
Thankyou to the following Patrons and Icons who have shared their portraits and messages about what beautiful means to them.

Thanks also to Elder Rights Advocacy for supporting this important initiative and Suzanne Phoenix for the powerful photograph. See Media Release here and quote from Aunty Sherree below.
"When you become older you appreciate who you are with much more authenticity. This is me it says. I am a First Nation Elder with wisdom and knowledge to share with the younger generations. My journey is slowly ending, everything is beautiful through my eye. I am beautiful. I leave this legacy to my daughters, granddaughters and future generations of granddaughters."
